This lockdown has presented so many challenges for everyone. The hardest for Sydneysiders is how long it has been and how long we still have to go. 10 more weeks for most of our kids to return to school... we are only half way there. Wow.
But here we are, being everything for everyone, trying to accomplish it all, well to at least survive anyways.
We prioritise groceries (geez all of these kids can eat!), schooling, our jobs, house work, watching the news, being the referee during fight club and also the school counsellor for our kids who just don't understand and have emotions pouring out of them.
But then what's left? Who prioritises us?
Pre-covid we might have gotten our hair done, or nails, or maybe a special spa treatment and that would rejuvenate us (until we got home). But what about longer term? We don't prioritise our mental health. The importance of meditation, relaxation, conversation and healing of the mind.
Why is it such a taboo subject?
I was speaking with another Counsellor today who said "what role models are there for someone who are mentally healthy?, can you give me a name?". People freely talk about "health" and "fitness" and "wealth", all of which can be seen on social media or on our TV screens. If asked a question about someone who was physically healthy I guarantee you could come up with several high profile stars. Why is that more important? Why doesn't society value our minds being healthy? Why is this a topic that isn't spoken about more?
My challenge for whoever is reading this this week is to prioritise your mind as much as your physical health, and to consider your mental health just as important.
Feel free to add a comment about how you are coping with this lock down or what is tricky right now. Let's get the conversation going.
Stay safe
